The University of Pittsburgh’s University Center for International Studies (UCIS) is seeking candidates for the new position of UCIS Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Manager. UCIS is home to seven academic centers that offer multidisciplinary programs for undergraduate and graduate students, professional development and funding for affiliated faculty, and initiatives and events for community organization and K-12 educators and students. UCIS is also home to affiliated programs and associations, Pitt Global Hub, Pitt’s Global Experiences Office (GEO), the Office of International Services (OIS), and the Nationality Rooms and Intercultural Exchange Programs (NRIEP). Overall, UCIS advances the goals of campus engagement with the rest of the world, but also promotes excellence in teaching and research about the rest of the world.
The UCIS DEIB Manager will report to the Executive Director of Academic Affairs in UCIS, but will work in partnership with the Office of the Director, the seven academic and research centers (Asian Studies Center, Center for African Studies, Center for Ethnic Studies Research, Center for Latin American Studies, Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, European Studies Center, and Global Studies Center), Pitt Global Hub, Pitt GEO, OIS, and the NRIEP to enhance existing programming and create new opportunities that will foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging across the university while better integrating DEIB conversations within a global agenda.
Working collaboratively with colleagues across the unit, the UCIS DEIB Coordinator will:
- Develop and implement initiatives and programming to enhance the professional development of UCIS staff and student workers and promote a positive and inclusive workplace and office culture. The UCIS DEIB Manager will be expected to form and chair a UCIS committee to support these efforts and create DEIB policies for the unit.
- Design, implement, and manage a comprehensive plan and set of programs to support the enrollment, academic success, retention, and wellbeing of underrepresented students into certificate programs and global experiences (including study abroad).
- Design, implement, and manage a set of programs to support the success, wellbeing, and belonging of international faculty and students, as well as visiting international scholars affiliated with UCIS.
- Engage with UCIS centers and other units to develop goals and an evaluative framework to measure progress towards those goals to promote meaningful co-curricular programming that encourages diverse viewpoints and exposes participants to a wide range of voices and experiences informing their understanding of international and global topics.
- Serve as UCIS Liaison on Pitt-wide DEIB working groups/committees to share UCIS projects, programs, and initiatives that may serve University strategic efforts and to communicate Pitt-wide efforts to UCIS colleagues.
In addition, the UCIS DEIB Manager will work collaboratively with others across the campus, including the University’s Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (OEDI) to align UCIS DEIB goals with campus-wide objectives and to facilitate more co-sponsored programming that support underrepresented communities, while also engaging with units across campus working on and around issues of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc., to connect to Pitt’s global agenda. These efforts should build upon current best practices in equity, diversity, and inclusion, anti-bias and anti-racism programming, as well as existing University programs and resources. This role will be highly visible and will provide an opportunity for an individual to make a significant impact. While internationalization and international studies are often pointed to as evidence of diversity and inclusion, the goal in creating this position is to build capacity to provide more reflection and consider best practices for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion objectives in campus-wide internationalization efforts and within international studies as well as within UCIS as a workplace. The person in this role will represent UCIS to the wider university and work with a broad population dedicated to advancing the university’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. This role requires creative thinking; strong collaboration and communication; and flexibility and adaptability in an emerging and changing environment. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in international education or international studies as well as strong knowledge of best practices in equity, diversity, and inclusion, anti-bias, and anti-racism in higher education. A master’s degree is preferred. This position is partially supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education and is contingent upon annual renewal of funding and success in subsequent grant cycles.
Bachelor's degree required; graduate degree preferred. 1-3 years previous experience related to DEIB work required; more is a bonus. Previous experience in higher education desired, but not required.
