networx | Recruitment Software & Services Bolton Part-time

Boys’ Senior School (11-18 Years)

Part-time 0.6 FTE (over 3 or maybe 4 days)

Required for September 2023

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Teacher of French to join our flourishing, dynamic department on a part-time, fixed term basis to cover a period of maternity leave. This will be for one academic year. The successful applicant will be a strong classroom practitioner who is able to infuse others with a love for French and to inspire the outstandingly able boys as well as to nurture those far less confident in their ability. A willingness to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the School is essential, with all staff playing a part in this important aspect of the school. The ability to teach either German or Spanish at KS3 would also be essential to the role.

Bolton School is a large, thriving, academically selective school, situated in an attractive, prosperous part of Bolton and with easy access to some of the nation’s finest cities and countryside. Together, the Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions offer pupils single sex education in a co-educational environment - ‘the best of both worlds’.

With 2,300 students on site, Bolton School is one of the largest independent day schools in the country. It is situated a mile or so from the town centre in a pleasant wooded campus, surrounded by 32 acres of playing fields. Serving a wide area of the North West through more than 20 coach routes. The School has for many years offered some form of fee assistance to a substantial proportion of its pupils. At present, 1 in 6 boys have fee assistance. The school prides itself not only on its academic tradition, but on the immense range of other activities which are vigorously pursued both in and beyond the school day.

All boys study French in Year 7. In Year 8, there is an element of free choice and the boys must study one of French or Spanish, in addition to a second MFL from Russian or German in Year 8. They then keep these choices until the end of Year 9 when they make their GCSE option choices. It is compulsory to study one modern foreign language for GCSE and boys are encouraged, if they have the aptitude, to study a second or even third language at GCSE. We have many dual, and even the odd triple, linguists here at school and languages are a thriving and prominent part of the school curriculum.

Each colleague has his/her own teaching room with a PC linked to a data projector and the ability to project material from the iPad through Apple TV. All pupils and staff have their own iPad and all pupils have their own hard copy of the relevant text book. We have made great strides in integrating e-learning into the classroom in recent years and this approach runs alongside more traditional methodology with a work scheme founded on grammatical progression. We regularly share and adapt our resources and methodology based on evidence-based research.

We have a Foreign Language Assistant who is selected annually through our link with the British Council. S/he takes our GCSE students in small groups once a fortnight preparing the oral component in consultation with the regular class teacher. Our A-Level students have an additional weekly period with the native speaker.
